Never Stop Learning

As a software developer, I’ve experienced quite a bit of change throughout my career. While some skills have always been relevant there are those that are in a constant state of change. Innovation brings improvement to processes, security, and performance at a pace that makes complacency a dangerous state of mind. For example, the mobile app development ecosystem has never stopped innovating – especially with smartphones. App development for the iPhone alone has continually changed since it was first introduced.

Originally, the only option for apps on the iPhone was creating a mobile-friendly web app accessible by Mobile Safari. Eventually Apple allowed native app development but every year or so they update requirements expecting developers to release versions which meet new standards. Now, with the adoption of progressive web app standards across iOS and Android, some developers are finding value in turning to newer web development tools with a delivery that can be more suitable to their business.

Regardless of what you work towards, goals are important and should be celebrated but don’t become complacent. Keep improving your craft and never stop seeking opportunities to improve. The world is constantly innovating and you owe it to yourself not to be left behind as a result of your own complacency.

Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young.
